Durant Ball, who resides in Newport News, Virginia, was born and reared in western North Carolina. He observed the beautiful rural countryside only twenty miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, an extraordinary picturesque region similar to western Virginia. His interest in painting began at an early age and had continued throughout his life.
Durant pursued his formal art training at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, where he received both his Master of Art Degree in painting and his Bachelor of Science Degree in Commercial Art. Besides having an extensive Commercial Art background, he was a college assistant professor of art as well as Art Department Chairman, where he taught for eleven years. In December of 1982, he left teaching to devote full time to painting.
Artist Statement
Inspiration for many of my paintings comes from Virginia’s costal waterways. The vast marshlands, tributaries, and abundant wildlife provide my favorite subjects. Considerable thought and planning goes into my paintings before applying the first brush stroke. These preliminary stages of my painting’s development are essential in charting my course of action. I adhere to the principles of good craftsmanship and their applications as part of the creative process. The incentive, drive, and desire to paint are a result of countless hours spent afield in study and observation. This stimulus provides the substance to record in paint a genuine statement representing a personal relationship I feel for the subject. I love to paint and find it exciting to be ever extending the boundaries of my craft through learning, exploration, and hard work. I paint in the traditional, realistic style but more importantly “I strive to paint as I see it.”
